Swimming, bathing and showering with a plaster cast
If you’ve ever broken your arm or leg, you’ll know that wearing a plaster cast is inconvenient. Conventional plaster casts are extremely heavy and cannot come into contact with water, making it difficult to have a bath or shower because you have to avoid getting the cast wet.
Wearing a plaster cast also limits your life because you can‘t go swimming or enjoy a holiday as much as you would otherwise. Thankfully, there is now a solution – the water-resistant plaster cast, which allows you to do all this and more whilst wearing a plaster cast.
How does the water-resistant plaster cast work?
The water-resistant plaster cast consists of a special cushioning material under a modern, ultra-light synthetic support band. The material is waterproof, breathable and washable, allowing you to shower, bathe or even swim, despite wearing a stable plaster cast.
The water-resistant plaster cast is not only comfortable to wear but it also has the correct stability of a plaster cast, thanks to its innovative, three-dimensional construction from water-resistant fibres developed by medical technology.
The open fabric structure allows water to drain from the cast, while the residual moisture evaporates with the help of the body&heat. Most plaster casts dry within approximately 90 minutes. An adhesive coating facilitates the installation of the cast and prevents it from slipping while it is being fitted. The risks of skin macerations, pressure points, odour and skin itches are reduced by the special under-cushioning.
Fitting a water-resistant plaster cast
With sufficient experience in fitting plaster casts and after learning about the new materials, it is absolutely no problem for an experienced specialist orthopedist to fit a water-resistant plaster cast.
At Medisport-Mallorca Center in Bendinat/Calvia, the orthopedist, traumatologist and experienced sports physician, Dr. Marco Seita fits the water-resistant plaster cast as a matter of course, in addition to using other special techniques, such as Kinesio Taping and Sports Taping, as part of his wide-ranging conservative treatment concepts.
