With three weeks of lockdown under our belts the crew of S/Y Kokomo decided to put all of the extra hours of downtime into something positive that could really make a difference amidst so much worry and uncertainty.
After doing some research on local charities and organisations they came across Age Concern Mallorca. This non-profit organisation run by volunteers has been based on the island since 1994 and supports the elderly of Mallorca. Their work is needed now more than ever taking food to those who aren’t able to leave the house, checking on their well-being and providing a smiling face from a safe distance to those who may not have the family support that many of us are so lucky to have during these times.
As a group S/Y Kokomo crew will be cycling 1,000 miles over 10 days to raise money and awareness for Age Concern. They have setup a ‘Go Fund Me’ page to allow people to donate to their very worthy cause. Every cent makes a euro and every euro goes towards making a difference so we encourage you to donate what you can and spread the word!
Age Concern Mallorca
Started back in 1994, Age Concern Mallorca aims to improve wellbeing for those over 60, assisting in making sure that daily life is sustainable and adaptable as their circumstances change over time.
Some of the many services provided are:
- Information
- Accompaniment to doctors’ surgeries and hospital appointments to translate
- Residential home visits
- Medical aids for recuperation
- Food parcels for the needy
- Excursions, social events, and fund raisers
They also offer help in many other ways, and if they are unable to assist, they will endeavour to direct enquiries to the best point of contact.
In order to raise much needed funds Age Concern participate in bazaars and fairs selling homemade jams and marmalades and other articles. They do not have a charity shop but have a vehicle which allows for travel around the island.
