Some people say walking is a moving meditation. I certainly believe it. That’s just one of the reasons I start every single day with a walk.
If you’ve read the first post in this series detailing my everyday wellness rituals, you’ll know I scrape my tongue on rising. It makes me smile to think a few of you might now be doing the same thing. Next, I walk.
My ritual
There are so many benefits to walking. Every morning, I wake at six o’clock and head out into the country lanes of Calvia where I live, just outside of Palma. I walk for one hour, it makes me feel positive and happy, and I find it to be a wonderful way to set the tone for my day.
The benefits of walking
Walking is an easy low-impact workout that is free and can be done literally anywhere. Taking a walk not only nurtures your body, but it lifts your mood too. A good walk will bring on the release of endorphins and serotonin creating the same natural high associated with more intensive workouts.
Other proven health benefits of regular brisk walking include keeping high blood pressure and cholesterol at bay.
When I meditate whilst walking I feel extremely present. Taking in my surroundings and giving myself space to think often helps me work through issues I am having in my life by thinking more creatively. I find when I am able to focus in the morning in this way, I am setting myself up for a positive day ahead.
And it goes without saying – if I am tense at the beginning of a walk, by the end of it I always come back calm and centred.
Walking in Mallorca
Walking somewhere as beautiful as Mallorca is something I don’t take for granted. I especially love hiking in the breathtaking Tramuntana Mountains – they’re so special UNESCO have named them a World Heritage Site.
Three of my favourite hikes in the mountains are To Puig del Teix and via the Archduke Path the The Gully of Biniaraix and Castell d’Alaro
We are absolutely spoilt when it comes to walks and hikes around our beautiful island. From challenging mountain hikes, to gentle seafront paths and picturesque country trails – we’ve got something for every mood and fitness level.
If you want to get an idea of exactly what I mean, you might like to watch this video.
Mallorca is also a brilliant place to explore on foot as a tourist. Not only the nature trails but through our vibrant city and picturesque villages, too.
I hope you’re feeling inspired to lace up your trainers and get on the walking tracks that can be found all over our island. I’d love to hear about any brilliant walks you discover on our island. I can’t wait for hiking season to begin!
