What is reflexology?
For thousands of years many cultures have considered the feet to be an important link to various organs and glands of the body, performing reflexology to treat many different afflictions and diseases. More than just a foot massage, reflexology involves applying pressure to certain points on the feet (or hands and ears) to activate the body’s own healing processes in different body zones.
So in what ways can reflexology benefit you? Here are a few reasons to book in a session (besides the allure of simply getting a good foot rub!)
1. Relieves aches and pains
Any pain is not fun and can make day to day life much more of a trial than it should be. Reflexology is commonly used to treat different types of aches and pains, such as neck pain, migraines, headaches, and backaches. There are close to 15,000 nerve endings in the feet. Reflexology stimulates these nerves and the central nervous system, which in turn can alter the way you feel pain.
2. Relaxation and better sleep
If you’ve ever suffered from insomnia you know how much it can interfere with your wellbeing. Reflexology has been known to open the neural pathways, inducing relaxation and a sense of calm. For this reason, it is used to help cure sleep disorders, easing tension and assisting the body to fall back into its normal, healthy circadian rhythm.
3. Detoxification
We all seem to be trying to detox in one way or another as our systems are constantly being bombarded with a cocktail of processed foods, additives and pollutants. Our body’s natural method of eliminating toxins is through the urinary tract, so its function is very important in keeping us healthy. Reflexology has been shown to improve bladder function and reduce urinary tract issues creating a more efficient system of eliminating toxins.
4. Fights anxiety and depression
Serotonin is the feel good, happy hormone. When your serotonin levels dip low you could be left feeling down. Stimulating certain reflex points can trigger the production of serotonin leaving you in a much better mood. The adrenal, hypothalamic, pineal and pituitary glands also play a role in emotions. Stimulating these corresponding reflex points on the feet can ease depression, as well as feelings of anxiety and stress.
5. Improves blood circulation
And finally, one of the most well-known benefits of reflexology is an improvement in blood flow throughout the body. This means that blood and oxygen are being cycled more efficiently. More oxygen reaches the vital organs, optimising their functioning, increasing the metabolism, and promoting faster healing and regrowth of damaged cells.
