The clink of glasses…the cacophony of laughter…warm smiles…the tentative ones too…first encounters…whiffs of smoke…conversation…titillation…flirtation…silences dotted throughout…

As an expatriate on Mallorca, there is nothing that brings you face to face with your self-confidence and social ease more quickly than the *stories of the characters* in a new environment, as they begin to unfold.

I was vividly reminded of this at a lovely and – as a professional clairvoyant who works extremely closely with women – fascinating party I attended recently in Felanitx (you’ll see the relevance of this as you read on). There was a wonderful array of nationalities represented…Dutch, German, Italian, Finnish, British, Spanish, French, Mallorquin and I am certain, many more.

As you would expect, there was a corresponding eclectic mix of personalities, and as the night wore on, various ‘layers’ within the social scene began to separate out. For example, there were ‘the quiet ones’ who were happy to be in each others’ company because being huddled around their table, felt cozy, insulated and safe.
More than a few of those who have been on the island a long time were looking on at or questioning with keen interest, those who had more newly arrived.There were the families who didn’t quite know many people and mostly stuck to themselves. Some men and women talked all night only to the folks they knew. Then there were folks who knew many people and seemed to sincerely enjoy reconnecting with old acquaintances and friends.

Perhaps the behaviour I found most curious however, was that of some of the women I observed.  This fell roughly into two categories…those who were inclusive, friendly, genuine and warm, and those who were competitive, seemingly threatened on both personal and professional levels by other women there.  Despite their polished exteriors, their body language and conversation betrayed that they felt insecure.

The interesting thing if we consider this through a completely dispassionate lens however, is that this type of separation captures the universality of similar social situations, not only in Mallorca, but in pretty much every corner of the world.

Social connectedness – or disconnectedness – is an inescapable part of life. 

My reasons for highlighting this are twofold:

1.Whether or not you are an expat, meaningful community is important for your mental and emotional health. You need a support system that lifts you up and in order that you can have this, you need to be aware of the social subset – whether amongst those described above or some other – into which you tend to fall.

2. Once you have a better understanding of your social subset, it is vitally important if you don’t feel fulfilled, you realise from there, that you can acknowledge what feels better and more authentic to you.

You can evolve your situation.

You can desire true connection.

You CAN create meaningful community and socially enjoy much more.

In my work with clients over that past 16 years, I have had the great fortune of facilitating self-growth for many individual clients and intimate groups from the deepest places of witnessing and communication possible for the human soul.

This is the level of connection I have been so excited to bring into my relationships on Mallorca and am now doing through the Santanyi Women’s Self-growth and Spirituality Circle I lead and which was co-founded by Barbara Fasting

Potency of the Divine Feminine

One of the most precious gifts we can share as women with each other is deep connection, wisdom, compassion, healing and love. 

I say this in the full knowledge and personal and professional experience that most of us women go through life – our entire lives – not ever truly being understood, loved, validated and SEEN. This occurs through every level of our society, but sadly, in our closest relationships as well…with our parents, siblings, partners and sometimes, even those we consider our best friends.
