Did you know you have 60-80,000 thoughts every single day? Whether these are positive or pessimistic, that’s a lot of action going on between your ears’ that isn’t visible to the naked eye. If you’re like me it’s very easy to dwell on the negative sometimes. I’ve been noticing a tendency to worry lately, even though I’m well aware that worry doesn’t help any situation.
Recently I have felt a bit like I’ve been treading water in several areas of my life, and could really do with some support or at least some tools to help me feel like I’m making progress rather than merely keeping afloat. When the opportunity arose to attend a class with Mindset Trainer Jodie Tielbeke, I jumped at the chance. Although I didn’t have the foggiest what ‘Mindset Training’ entailed, I knew it most definitely couldn’t do any harm.
What is ‘Mindset Training’?
Mindset Training helps participants to become more aware of their thoughts, energy and emotions. In Jodies’s training she guides people towards a way of thinking that is helpful to them and that suits who they want to be. She does this by giving information, performing exercises, and by providing several mindset tools. Jodie describes how her trainees feel a greater sense of purpose; they feel more focus, more confidence and more self-love and acceptance. “Some get a big ‘aha’ breakthrough, for others there’s a soft, positive shift in energy. Both are equally amazing of course.”
Jodie explains that every person gets out of the training what is meant for him or her at that moment in their lives. The training brings together elements of the Law of Attraction, neuroscience, and behavioural psychology.
A ‘Hub’ of Inquisitive Individuals
The workshop was to take place at The Hub in Santa Catalina. A venue I’m familiar with, this co-working and event space really is an ideal place to be inspired. I followed its construction last year with interest, and I’m pleased to see the final result is a sleek and stylish setup where any entrepreneur would happily park up for the day to get through their ‘to-do’ list. With all the mod cons, meeting rooms, and event spaces, The Hub was a great choice for the workshop.
Upon entering one could immediately feel the energy in the room. It was clear I was in the presence of 15 women with goals and ambition, who like me were perhaps looking for some renewed motivation or that push to get things rolling. Jodie herself was immediately visible – exuding confidence and a big warm smile she made me feel instantly at ease. I was excited to find out what was in store!
The Workshop
We sit down and introductions are made to familiarise ourselves with our classmates. Jodie asks us to each give one word to describe our state of mind in that moment. A range of words crop up, from conflicted and dissatisfied to curious, calm, and aligned. Jodie begins to explain how our thoughts and our energy are linked, and that it takes discipline to reprogram ones mindset. The mind muscle in essence needs to be trained. Our thoughts affect the way we feel, how we see ourselves in the world, and ultimately how we behave. Our thoughts create our personality (literally our personal reality). It is in our nature to want to evolve. The only barrier between your current reality and your desired future is you!
At this point we start getting into some concepts of quantum physics. We discuss how thoughts create choices, which leads to behaviour, our experiences in the world, which creates emotions, and comes back full circle to influence our thoughts. Jodie then takes us through an exercise designed to help us clarify what we desire and how to get there. The exercise is called ‘Set the Future’ (you can access a link to this exercise for free here). We each find a quiet space to settle comfortably and begin to clear our minds from the incessant chatter and try to separate ourselves from our personality and thoughts. With a clear mind (or as clear as we can muster!) we are asked to visualise our future self. We do this for quite some time and eventually we’re asked to write down what we saw whether it was images, symbols, words – anything really. We finalise the exercise by asking our future self to give us a message including words of support, what to let go of, and what to focus more on.
The After Effects
We are now at the conclusion of the workshop and I must say the feeling is not at all dissimilar to how you feel after a good massage. I feel calm yet alert, and have been quite surprised at the images that were presented to me during the final exercise. Sceptics could say that anyone can simply practice visualization exercises at home, but as someone who is well aware of the benefits of positive visualization I am utterly useless at allocating time to this in my day-to-day life. Once in a blue moon when I do make time, I lose concentration almost immediately and declare it a wasted effort. Having someone like Jodie gently guiding you through these types of exercises, and making you commit to spending time on them makes a huge difference to actually seeing and feeling any shifts in your mentality and mindset.
Although this was a brief introductory session to Mindset Training, the resultant surge of motivation and clarity that came after the session was definitely enough to pique my interest in further sessions very soon.
