Last week I had my induction to the SIMPLIFYT programme and my starting point in this journey had been established. I had completed a short functional workout to gauge my fitness level and had an InBody Analysis to determine my body composition. Now it was time for the actual work to begin!
Weekly Programme:
- 2 x Boost 30′ sessions
- 1 x Electrofitness session
- 1 x 1hr outdoor circuit training session
- 1 x Life Coaching session
Week 1 – The Workouts
I must say it was a slightly bi-polar week. The grim realisation I was a now a single woman in my thirties, was alternating with bouts of elation at my newfound independence. With so many things up in the air, my SIMPLIFYT training programme proved to be a stabilising constant. Five days of the week I was forced to get myself out of the house and attend the training I had committed to. It quickly became apparent that this was doing wonders for my mood. Finishing a session left me glowing from an endorphin rush, and suddenly the world wasn’t so awful again.
The structure of the classes was proving to be perfect for my state of mind at this point. Short, intense classes with a maximum of 3 other participants means you aren’t slogging away for hours, and you always have a watchful eye on you opposed to blending in with the masses as is the case with some group fitness environments.
Let me note that I have done my fair share of all out, gruelling, hour plus long workouts over the years. I had been led to believe this is what garners results and is a necessary evil for a svelte physique. If this intense style of training had been proposed to me by founder Evelyn Sztojanov, I probably would have already bowed out at some stage of this first week. My mental state and adrenals could not have handled it. Instead I was having no qualms at all about my 4-times per week exercise regime. The quick sessions flew past and didn’t monopolise a quarter of the working day (by the time you travel, work out, shower and get yourself organised again). There was no sense of dread about what was in store at each class – I just knew I was going to go, do the session, and feel better after than when I arrived. It was a good start!
Week 1 – The Life Coaching
‘Life Coach’ is a profession bandied about a lot these days. It has always sounded like a luxury I could not afford, but would be very nice to have, even though I didn’t have a clue what a session actually involved. As part of my 10-week program I was to have weekly life coaching with SIMPLIFYT owner Evelyn Sztojanov, who is a trained coach and very passionate about helping people understand their behaviours and unlock their potential.
I was very curious as I arrived at my first session. What was in store? I soon found out that talking to Evelyn is like having a chat with a best friend. A best friend that is an extremely good listener and asks very thought-provoking questions. We covered so much ground in this first 1.5 hours- from what had brought me to this beautiful island (and to where I am mentally at this moment in time), how my childhood had shaped my perception, and why I placed certain pressures on myself even though they did not seem to align with my core beliefs. A big question that kept coming up was ‘why?’. Why do I feel this way? Why do I feel this pressure? Why do I think this is important?
Evelyn has a wide range of exercises and tools that she uses to make you think outside of the box, and really get to the heart of your ‘why’. She helps you step outside of yourself and examine who you are objectively without judgement. I left that first session feeling an emotional load had already been lifted. Finding myself suddenly at a crossroads in life (thanks to the 5-year relationship breakup in a foreign country with no family around!) I realised I didn’t need all of the answers right now. Each day, one step at a time, the path would be revealed to me. And that was ok! I could see this life coaching thing was going to be a real blessing.
